Southern Grandis®
Southern Grandis® is an FSC® plantation grown, clear grade hardwood exclusive to Millworks in the UK. Trees are ready to harvest once grown up to 70 metres tall and up to 250cm wide, based on a 23-30 year rotation. This means that Southern Grandis® is incredibly sustainable and the fibre produced is consistent; perfectly suited for high-end use.
Benefits of Southern Grandis®
Southern Grandis® Grading
Millworks Grade A
Millworks A Grade timber is one of our highest grades, featuring flat-sawn boards that showcase unique and interesting grain patterns. This grade is characterized by long, clear sections of timber with limited isolated defects, such as small knots and splits.
Grain pattern: The flat-sawn configuration produces distinctive and appealing grain patterns, adding visual interest to each board.
Defect limitations: Limited isolated defects ensure a largely clear appearance, making this grade suitable for premium applications.
Aesthetics: The unique and varied grain patterns of Millworks A Grade timber highlight its natural beauty, making it an excellent choice for design-focused applications and architectural features.
Millworks A Grade timber is ideal for a variety of uses, including cladding and fencing where a combination of beauty and durability is required.
Southern Grandis® Applications
Southern Grandis® is a cost-effective, sustainable, and visually appealing timber choice for external cladding, offering colour tones and aesthetic qualities comparable to Western Red Cedar. Its combination of beauty, workability, and moderate durability makes it a practical and stylish option for a variety of cladding applications.
Southern Grandis® is a dense hardwood, making it ideal for fencing battens and screens that remain durable over time, even in demanding outdoor conditions. With correct maintenance, its natural colour and grain provide a warm, timeless finish delivering a cost-effective option that enhances any garden or outdoor space.
In the correct conditions, when left uncoated Southern Grandis® will weather to a silver-grey. The results of the weathering process can vary depending on exposure to weather conditions and elevation. For consistent results OrganoWood® surface treatment can be factory applied for accelerated weathering and robust timber protection.
Specifying the correct fixings is critical to the performance of timber cladding. Specifically manufactured systems compatible with Millworks timber cladding and decking profiles, designed to ensure optimal performance of the timber and factory coatings. Southern Grandis® is classed as a medium movement timber and as such it’s important to face fix with an appropriate expansion gap between boards.
