Wood Stain Coating System

MillCoat® coating system is designed to both enhance the appearance of timber and offer a layer of defence against adverse weathering and UV degradation. This low-build wood stain is applied under controlled factory conditions to ensure a consistent and durable finish.

Benefits of MillCoat® coated timber cladding

Consistent colour

MillCoat® is applied using a controlled factory process to ensure even coverage and consistent distribution across each board. The semi-transparent stain provides rich colouring while allowing the timbers natural texture and grain pattern to remain visible.

Increased durability

The MillCoat® system has been developed to penetrate the boards surface creating a protective barrier that repels moisture whilst still allowing the timber substrate to breathe. The first layer of MillCoat® treats all four sides with subsequent layers building a robust finished face for lasting durability, prolonging the service life of both the coating and the wood underneath.

UV Protection

The pigments in MillCoat® wood stain act as a shield against UV degradation, slowing the fading process and reducing the impact of weathering. By providing a barrier against UV, MillCoat® stains retain their colour intensity and with regular maintenance, can help to maintain the wood’s natural colour.

Easy maintenance

While no coating system is completely maintenance-free, MillCoat® is designed for simple upkeep, saving both time and costs. Its penetrating formula means the stain resists peeling and flaking leading to easier maintenance and reapplication over time. When reapplying, a new coat can often go directly on top of the previous one, making maintenance more manageable and extending the lifespan of the coating without extensive prep work.

Customisable

In addition to our range of MillCoat® colours, custom colour matching is available for continuity with other design elements. For optimal performance, a surface texture is recommended prior to coating to allow deeper penetration into the timber. This results in a longer lasting timber finish, further minimising maintenance and optimising the performance of the MillCoat® wood stain system.

Sustainability & Maintenance

Sustainability

The MillCoat® water-based coating system is designed with a focus on sustainability, incorporating minimal volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to reduce environmental impact. By using water as the primary solvent instead of petroleum-based alternatives, MillCoat® lowers the release of harmful emissions and eliminates the need for harsh chemicals in the production process. Free from hazardous materials, this system is both safe and environmentally friendly.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance of timber coatings is crucial to ensure their long-lasting performance. Regular inspections are recommended and it is advisable to recoat proactively, rather than waiting for deterioration to occur. As general guidelines, Millworks recommend recoating light colours every two to three years and dark colours every three to five, depending on exposure and environmental conditions.
