THERMOWOOD CLADDING

Thermo D. (Redwood) Pinus sylvestris

Millworks source Thermowood from carefully selected Redwood, by leading Finnish sawmills. Natural, thermal modification enhances the wood’s natural attributes resulting in a desirable dark brown, which is incredibly stable and durable.

  • Grade: Sawfalling
  • Widths: 100/125/150/200mm boards

  • PEFC certified
  • Density: 420kg / m³
  • £22 per m2 for sawn profiles

Innovative

Thermowood is heat treated in a unique gradual modification process, reaching temperatures of 212c. Chemical and physical properties in the timber change permanently, making it perfect for external cladding.

Consistent

Thermowood is dark brown in colour throughout, giving it an attractive and consistent look. If left untreated the colour will turn a silver-grey. Or, treatment can be easily applied for colour protection.

Durability

Thermowoods heat treatment, modifies and enhances the properties in the timber making it resistance to fungi. It therefore has a service life of over 30 years. Thermowood is BS EN 350-2 Class 2.

Stability

Thermowood is less likely to warp, twist or cup due to the inability to absorb or lose moisture caused from the thermal modification process. The low moisture content also achieves a superior, smooth finish when machined.

GRADE

Selective Scandinavian Redwood is chosen for tight sound knots.

Thermowood (Thermo D) where D stands for durability, has a darker brown tone. Its durability and stability are improved significantly.

In external applications BS EN 335 Use Class 3, Thermowood meets the requirements of durability BS EN 350 Class 2.

DURABILITY CLASS 2, SUITABLE FOR EXTERIOR USE (BS EN 350-2)

Weathering or finishing

In the correct conditions, Thermowood will weather to a silver-grey, if left untreated.
Although naturally durable, Thermowood can be finished for protection against the elements. This will keep it looking consistent on all elevations of your project. Millworks can advise on different options for protecting your timber.

Coatings can be applied under controlled factory conditions with Millworks state of the art finishing line. Alternatively, on-site products can be advised and supplied.

Off-site (factory applied) coatings

  • Flawless finish under factory conditions for outstanding UV protection.

  • Wide range of colours available.

  • Coating to all 4 sides for increased durability and stability.

On-site (hand applied) coatings

  • On-site weather variation, time-frames and application rate eliminated.

  • Lead-times are not guaranteed due to on-site variables.

  • Unexpected hidden costs

Fire Retardant for Timber

FRX Exterior fire retardant can be applied to Thermowood cladding when specified, to comply with national Building Regulations where Euroclass B or C are required. Applied under controlled conditions in a vacuum pressure timber impregnation plant. The treatment complies with ISO accreditation, which does not compromise critical properties such as strength, durability, corrosivity and hygroscopicity.

Alternatively, HR-Prof can be applied on site, a fire retardant that complies with Euroclass B or C for spread of flame, offering a quicker and sometimes more economical option.

Fixings

Stainless-steel cladding fixings should be used because natural oils in the timber have a corrosive effect on ferrous metals.
