MOKUZAI® SURFACE TEXTURES
Millworks® Mokuzai® finishes are inspired by ‘Yakisugi’, a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation by charring with fire. Originally used as way of constructing with lower grade timber, this traditional method has increased in popularity for contemporary design due to its ability to create unique and beautiful surface pattern.
Modern processes such as thermal modification and kiln drying have allowed wide use of durable timber products and made this authentic aesthetic a firm favourite for external and internal projects alike.
Our Mokuzai® products have been created to capture the beauty of this bespoke finish without compromising on longevity for modern living.
Burned
This finish uses traditional burning methods to scorch the top surface of each board. Wire brushes are then used to further enhance the natural beauty of the timbers texture and grain pattern. Finished with a factory coating to bring out a magnificent depth of colour and protect from UV.
‘Charred’
A flameless method creates a hardwearing and durable torched burn pattern. Mechanical heat rollers are used to finish with the look of heavily charred timber with improved surface stability. Finished with a factory coating for a consistent texture that will not chip or flake.
Mill-sawn
Heated mechanical rollers are used to create this rustic and characterful finish. A twist on our traditional fine sawn surface texture which increases definition and adds texture to any project. Combine with modern profiles for a contemporary take on a classic finish.
Millworks in-house advanced factory coating systems produce consistent results on all Mokuzai® products. Depending on your chosen design, you can choose from a selection of RAL colours for interior or exterior application. This greatly improves the timber’s service life, reduces weathering and enhances the beauty that Mokuzai® finishes create. Please note our Burned product is a texture on the wood’s surface, and as such should be treated as a more delicate pre-finished wood product when handling and installing.
Specifically manufactured stainless-steel fixings, available in secret-fix, face-fix or clip systems, are designed for all Millworks® timber cladding and decking profiles. Our fixings ensure long service life for best performance of the timber, surface textures and coatings in any location.
