Newmarket July Racecourse -Rose Terrace
Western Red Cedar
Situated at the winning post of the historic Newmarket July Racecourse, this project set out to upgrade the jockey changing rooms and weighing area and build a new champagne bar for spectators to enjoy. Special considerations needed to be given to the site to preserve the 80-year-old steel frame whilst adding the modern newbuild section for a fresh and contemporary finish to the structure.
The Wigley Group visited our Cambridge showroom with specifications to match the existing courtyard buildings which were refurbished 3 years prior. Exacting profiles and detailing had to be manufactured so that the refurbishment was cohesive with the current stand used by trainers and owners. As well as remodelling the internal jockey rest area, the project created a new upper terrace and bar with spectacular racecourse views, all clad in Western Red Cedar.
Western Red Cedar is a sustainable timber with exceptional performance, sourced from slow grown forests in North-West Canada. Due to naturally occurring compounds, Cedar is durable and rot-resistant with a long service life of over 40 years. The low density of this species makes it a fantastic thermal insulator and the lightweight nature of boards means it easy to install.
Variation in colour ranges from pale cream to warm pink offering a dynamic finish for both traditional and contemporary architecture. Available in a wide range of grades to suit any project, the grain pattern and natural characteristics of this species can be further enhanced with the addition of a surface texture or factory coating.
“We wanted to use Millworks as they were local to the project. After a visit to their mill, we saw the quality of the product and knew it would work perfectly with what we are trying to achieve.”
