Positioned on the upper slope of the idyllic Waveney Valley, Angles House was designed to seamlessly fit with its natural surroundings while delivering exceptional sustainability and functionality. Carefully planned to blend into the landscape, Beech Architects designed a series of four single storey, wooden-clad huts interlinked by glass connections, to follow the contour of the hill. The low-profile build was thoughtfully created to reflect the interaction with the landscape while also enhancing the way the occupants interact with the space. Sustainability was a core design objective, focusing on creating a functional structure that achieved high eco credentials similar to PassiveHaus standards.
To align with the eco-friendly design philosophy, the materials selected for Angles House were chosen for their sustainability, circular lifecycle, and ability to complement the landscape. A strong preference was given to sourcing materials and craftsmen locally within East Anglia to minimise environmental impact and support local businesses. The home features a timber frame, timber cladding, a slate roof, and triple-glazed windows. Challenges during the selection processes, such as global supply chain disruptions and rising material costs, led the homeowners to choose FSC® certified Larch cladding, factory coated with OrganoWood®. This innovative treatment offers a sustainable and durable finish, enabling the timber to silver naturally over time, harmonising Angles House beautifully into the hillside.
