Inspired by the local beach landscape, overlooking the reed marsh on the Suffolk Coast, this project was built as the new home for 2 creatives.

Designed as a contemporary interpretation of the blackened timber fisherman’s huts on the beach, Thermowood® was specified in a custom triple shadow profile with deep shadows creating vertical texture.

Long set lengths allowed installation without joints, resulting in a visually impactful projected first floor, reflecting that of local timber Tudor architecture. Landscaping mirrored the seascape with naturally weathered, silver-grey oak.

Thermowood is a highly stable thermally modified timber, with exceptional sustainability properties. The modification process uses natural methods only, heat and steam, to improve the wood’s durability and prolong its service life. A resin-free timber makes this the perfect base for factory coatings and the unique knotty grain pattern provides texture and interest when manufactured with a surface texture.

Proven to work well in a variety of climates and internal applications. Thermowood is one of the best low movement timbers and due to its inability to absorb or lose moisture, does not react to changes in humidity. Its low moisture content also achieves a superior finish when machined to weather or when paired with a factory coating.

“We chose to use timber for this build as it delivers a warm, comfortable and highly tactile surface that no other material can offer. Millworks provided a great service; their knowledgeable team gave use good prices and delivered the project on time. ”
