Surrounded by open countryside Pips Barn and Kleggs Haus were designed with reference to the large agricultural Barn which previously occupied the site. The objective was to sensitively design two highly energy efficient properties to harmoniously cohere with the natural surroundings.

The use of traditional materials, such as the timber cladding, were used to integrate the buildings into the natural environment. The mirrored properties pull on local influences with Pips Barn being left natural to weather gracefully, and Kleggs Haus finished in Black as a contrast which reflects traditional rural barns. Millworks tongue and grooved profile with a secret fix was selected and installed vertically giving clean lines and a modern contemporary finish.

Commonly specified for its impressive sustainability credentials and dimensional stability, Thermowood delivers long lasting timber performance. The thermal modification process improves durability allowing this timber to remain uncoated even in harsh climate conditions. The natural attributes of Thermowood can be enhanced by the addition of a surface texture and factory coating, maximising the beauty of the texture and grain pattern.

Due to the close proximity of the barns to each other, the cladding on the external walls that faced each other was required to be fire treated. Millworks FRX treated timber meets the requirements of national Building Regulations where Euroclass B or C are required. Treatment is carried out in high pressure chambers to penetrate fire retardant deep into the timber and achieve the required classification. These fire performance properties do not compromise fundamental timber characteristics such as strength or durability.

“The process and experience with Millworks was first class and I would have no hesitation using them again in the future and recommending them.”
