Contemporary Garden Room

Southern Grandis

Myspace Garden Studios, has been building bespoke timber garden studios in and around Cambridge for nearly 19 years, working with Millworks timber for a number of these. Their spaces have a variety of uses, many being used as artist’s studios originally but increasingly used as offices since the pandemic.

For this project they approached Millworks with the objective of creating a modern space designed with a clear grade timber that supported the end user’s request for a building material with great sustainability credentials.

Southern Grandis is a straight grained, fine textured timber, harvested from 25 – 30 year old trees. Careful management and good forestry practices produce consistent grading of largely vertical grain boards.

This timber species is a great choice for numerous applications due to controlled kiln drying at source and increased dimensional stability makes it a great choice for factory coatings. Colours vary from white to pink to dark red providing a more cost-effective alternative to Western Red Cedar with no compromise on durability.

Millworks have partnered with Southern Grandis to help build relationships with local sawmills and support programmes working to minimise environmental impact, increase genetic research to combat changing climates and drive positive social change.

“I love the look of the timber cladding and my clients tend to prefer the natural look of timber too. This project was the first time we’d used Southern Grandis. I think it looks as good as cedar but is less expensive. My client was very happy with the cladding, and I’d certainly be very happy to clad our buildings with it in future”.
