Southern Grandis (Eucalyptus Grandis)

This modern self-build project was designed to create a residence that would be resilient, adaptable, and have high eco-credentials. The owners embarked on this journey with a clear vision: to construct a home that not only meets the highest standards of sustainability but also remains functional and comfortable, regardless of their changing needs. Their dream materialized into a contemporary three-bedroom house that skilfully blends modern design with traditional materials.

Chosen for its outstanding sustainability, Millworks Southern Grandis® was used across the build as a standout feature, offering both aesthetic beauty and environmental benefits. Positioned with a North-South orientation the plot is relatively exposed, meaning that any building materials used needed to be resilient against both strong exposure and northerly wet winds. Knowing that the cladding would face harsh weather, Southern Grandis® was selected for its durability and factory coated for improved UV protection.

When aiming for a sustainable building solution that is both functional and beautiful, Southern Grandis® is a popular choice. It is impressively accredited, flying the FSC® flag. Its stability is a result of the kiln drying process undertaken to control the moisture content and maximise the wood’s longevity. The end product is a durable timber, with an incredibly fine surface texture, making Southern Grandis’ primarily vertical grain. This timber is ideal for homes designed like this one, using external cladding to exaggerate architectural features – Southern Grandis® is consistent in appearance and naturally occurs in a range of striking colours, from light white, to warm reds. This colour can be further enriched with the addition of a factory coating such as MillCoat® UV Light, a lightly tinted coating which offers improved UV protection and a uniform finish.
