Woodland Office
Thermowood (Redwood)
Settled in a tranquil area of woodland opposite the client’s main house, this building is used as a studio workplace. Designed by Cambridge-based practice Mole Architects the brief was for a low impact building which provided an open and light filled space to work in, without being in the house.
Built according to PassiveHaus principles, Millworks were contacted by the project owner for a cladding material that would support the building standards for efficient insulation, little active heating or cooling and impressive airtightness levels.
“The entire building is timber as this was the best option for achieving a highly energy efficient and sustainable building. We chose black cladding to allow the house to be low key and blend with the woodland environment.”
Thermowood® (Redwood) is a Finnish grown, PEFC certified timber. The patented thermal modification process uses heat and steam only, no toxins or chemicals are used at any stage. This enhances the natural properties and once modified this wood is extremely stable, durable and less likely to warp, twist or cup. This increases the timbers service life and allows it to act as a long-term carbon store.
Dimensional stability of this timber makes it the perfect base for surface textures as durability and colour are consistent throughout each board. The resin-free property provides a brilliant substrate for factory coatings allowing freedom and creativity for different applications.
“Millworks offered a competitive quote and because we are nearby, we wanted to use a local provider.”
