Thermowood (Redwood)
This project saw the complete refurbishment and extension of a locally listed building in Watford, Hertfordshire. The original property was gatehouse to historic Cassiobury House dating from 1872 and as such required thoughtful modernisation. Experienced Studio CBD were tasked with this project and aimed to upgrade the thermal performance of the building envelope on older parts of the house, as well as extending to the rear to link the main house with the adjacent annex and garage structure.
The extension was designed to be purposefully contemporary whilst honouring the history of the listed building. Dark timber boarding on the oldest parts of the house were referenced through the specification of Millworks Brushed Thermowood which was treated with Millcoat® Charcoal Black. As a result, the extension stands proudly and provides a modern contrast which complements the history of the existing property. By using Thermowood exterior cladding, Studio CBD were able to ensure thermal stability throughout the build.
Designed to last, Millworks Thermowood has a service life of over thirty years. Meaning this house is modernised to be able to suitably stand the test of time, promoting considered restoration and giving this property a further chance at longstanding history. This hard-wearing timber is heat treated in a unique gradual modification process – chemical and physical properties in the timber change permanently, making it ideal for external cladding.
Delivering excellent performance, the qualities of Thermowood are further enhanced by the addition of a surface texture and factory coating. Wire brushing enhances the natural grain and structure of the timber and provides increased adhesion for Millcoat® factory coatings. Coating all four sides determines a flawless finish and increased protection against UV-light and adverse weathering. By utilising our innovative factory line we are able to offer a consistently finished product with heightened performance.
