ThermoWood® Pine
This project aimed to design a modern, sustainable home that artfully combined striking building materials with eco-conscious technologies. The result was a contemporary structure featuring two mono-pitch gable ends, finished in seam zinc panels, surrounding a central glazed section. This central section features a large glass front elevation, framed with Corten steel, forming a distinctive H-shaped frame. This balance of contemporary design and functionality became a core part of the home’s aesthetic and purpose.
The house incorporated solar panels, ground air source heat pumps, and EV charging stations, delivering a fully sustainable eco-home. Each aspect of the design was focused on minimizing environmental impact, ensuring the house was not only energy-efficient but also future-proofed for green living. The choice of materials reflected this dedication to sustainability. ThermoWood® Pine, known for its durability and impressive eco credentials was chosen and finished with Mokuzai® MillSawn surface texture, a modern take on traditional fine-sawn timber.
Millworks Mokuzai® MillSawn finish, used in combination with modern profiles, provides a tactile quality to the build. Created using mechanical rollers, this finish preserves the surface integrity of each board, extending the lifespan of factory coatings and reducing the need for frequent maintenance. Millworks Mokuzai® products are compatible with a wide range of building materials and are perfect for use across a variety of applications.
ThermoWood® Pine, a thermally modified timber, is known for its durability and long lifespan. Typically, it can last 30 years or more when properly maintained, depending on the environment and exposure to elements. The thermal modification process that uses only heat and steam, improves the wood’s resistance to decay, insects, and moisture, enhancing its natural durability. During the thermal modification process, the cellular structure of ThermoWood® Pine is altered, improving its dimensional stability. This is particularly important when factory coating as this allows for a consistent and uniform finish providing superior protection against the elements for long-lasting performance.
