Farnham House
Western Red Cedar
Tye Architects were tasked with creating a timeless family home that satisfied both Green Belt planning requirements and the client’s budget.
Set within a mature landscape, the house draws inspiration from its natural context, with cladding and other materials chosen to complement the surrounding trees and woodland character of the plot. The design adopts a simple, modern form, defined by clean lines and a restrained material palette that emphasises simplicity and proportion.
The timber façade has been left to weather naturally, developing a silver-grey tone that contrasts beautifully with the striking brick base, giving the building a grounded and enduring presence.
This fine palette of stonework and timber cladding establishes a balance between traditional materials and contemporary design, creating a home that feels both refined and rooted in its setting. The result is a distinctive, individual, and sustainable dwelling that sits comfortably within its environment while expressing a confident architectural identity.
“ We are always searching for modern, elegant and timeless high-quality products that allow us to respond to the context of the site and meet our clients’ high expectations on sustainability and value for money.”

Millworks Western Red Cedar cladding offers a combination of natural beauty, dimensional stability, and long-term performance. Naturally lightweight due to its low density, Western Red Cedar is easy to handle, cut, and install, making it a trusted choice for those seeking efficiency without compromising structural integrity. Left to weather naturally, the timber will gradually develop a silver-grey patina, a process that is a normal part of wood’s life cycle and influenced by exposure to the elements. As a low movement timber with class 2 durability in exterior applications, uncoated Western Red Cedar cladding provides a low-maintenance solution for projects aiming for a natural, organic finish.
