ThermoWood® PINE
This new build replaces a long-abandoned Georgian house, drawing on the agricultural vernacular while delivering a bold, modern living space.
The design intention was clear: to create a warm and welcoming family home with practical and comfortable living areas and a strong architectural style. Every decision was intentional, with a minimal material palette chosen to bring cohesion, depth, and longevity to the design.
At ground level, the building is constructed from locally sourced stone, echoing the boundary walls that define the local farmland. Above, a striking first-floor takes inspiration from traditional barns – angular, purposeful, and honest in form. Clad throughout in charred timber and finished with metal roofing, the project nods to historic agricultural buildings whilst showcasing a contemporary twist.
With such a restrained palette, each material had to work hard, not just aesthetically, but in terms of performance. The client admired the bold aesthetic of charred timber, but wanted a more stable appearance over time, without the uneven weathering that traditionally charred timber can develop. Mokuzai® ThermoWood® PINE offered the perfect solution: retaining the visual impact while providing superior durability and reduced maintenance.
The selected Triple Shadow profile was a deliberate choice, introducing depth and variation in tone that shifts with the changing light throughout the day. It adds a subtle richness to the façade with levels of shadow texture that allow the architecture to evolve visually as the sun moves across the sky.
Millworks’ ThermoWood® PINE is a reliable timber product sourced exclusively from International ThermoWood® Association producers. It undergoes a patented thermal modification process free from chemicals and toxins, enhancing durability and dimensional stability. The Mokuzai® ‘Charred’ surface texture provides the look of heavily charred timber with improved longevity. Factory coated in-house with the Millcoat® system to ensure a uniform finish and long-lasting performance.
“Millworks were a pleasure to work with from start to finish, from the initial discussions around samples and fixing options to the seamless ordering process and timely site delivery.”
