Sitting within an urban landscape, this build sought to reimagine a 1960s bungalow into a modern ‘cabin in the woods’, evoking a sense of seclusion and tranquillity. Inspired by Scandinavian architecture, the homeowner’s goal was to create a space that felt peaceful and connected to the natural world while incorporating modern comforts for a family home. The design revolved around clean lines and functionality, favouring a simple yet contemporary finish.

Timber cladding was a key design choice, reflecting the homeowner’s appreciation for natural materials and rooting the project within its natural surroundings. Initially, Yakisugi, a traditional Japanese wood-burning technique, was considered for this project to mirror the natural tones and textures of the landscape. However, concerns about surface brittleness and susceptibility to damage led instead to the specification of factory coated Thermowood. This versatile timber provides an ideal alternative, offering a similar aesthetic with greater durability and stability. By opting for Thermowood, the homeowners were able to achieve a high quality, modern finish while ensuring long-lasting timber cladding performance.

Millworks Thermowood timber cladding is a durable and eco-conscious building material created from softwood that has been thermally modified to enhance its natural attributes. Through heat treatment the timber undergoes a transformation that makes it more resistant to decay and improves the dimensional stability of each board. This reduces the timber’s tendency to warp and twist, making it an excellent choice for exterior cladding in a wide range of applications. The dimensional stability also provides a consistent surface for factory coatings and when paired with a surface texture, ensure improved coating adhesion and a more uniform finish.
