Celebrating Earth Day 2025: Building a Sustainable Future with Timber

22nd April 2025

At Millworks, Earth Day is more than a calendar date, it’s a reminder of why we do what we do. This year we are proud to stand alongside Timber Development UK (TDUK) to recognise the vital role that the timber industry plays in building a greener, more sustainable future for all.
As the UK’s largest supply chain body for timber, Timber Development UK are committed to driving responsible practices across the entire sector. Earth Day is the perfect moment to celebrate the progress that’s already being made and encourage even more positive change.
Timber is unique as a construction material, not only is it renewable, but it also stores carbon throughout its life, contributing directly to the urgent goal of reducing emissions across the construction industry. From source to site, we believe every board has a job to do, both in terms of performance and in helping to reduce the environmental footprint of our built environment.
When sourced responsibly, timber is an important contributor to low-carbon construction. That’s why we place importance on sustainable sourcing and the transparent supply chains that support it. At TDUK all members, including Millworks, must commit to the Responsible Purchasing Policy (RPP); a rigorous, independently audited due diligence framework that ensures legal, sustainable timber sourcing in line with international best practice and UK regulations.
Developed by TDUK, the Responsible Purchasing Policy is a cornerstone of their sustainability approach. The policy requires all TDUK members to conduct ongoing, documented due diligence across their supply chains, helping demonstrate their commitment to ethical sourcing and continuous improvement. We’re delighted to share that Millworks recently successfully completed its first TDUK Responsible Purchasing audit, a major milestone that reflects the company’s dedication to traceability, legal compliance and sustainable sourcing.
Through strong industry collaboration and a shared commitment to sustainability, we can all ensure that timber remains not just a material of choice, but a material of responsibility. Whether you’re cladding a home, designing a public building, or developing a commercial project, choosing responsibly sourced timber is a meaningful step toward a more sustainable future. Together we’re focused on delivering timber that’s built to last – one sustainably sourced board at a time.
