Key Architectural Trends to Watch in 2025

As we begin 2025, architecture is incorporating exciting new trends that blend innovation and sustainability. At Millworks we work closely with specifiers and designers including Devlin Architects who are dedicated to addressing climate change while improving and preserving heritage buildings. We caught up with their team to explore the key architectural trends that are expected to shape the year ahead.
Adding depth and interest through cladding design
Timber cladding is much more than a protective layer, it’s a powerful tool to create dynamic aesthetics and visual intrigue. Devlin Architects are exploring how profiled timber cladding can transform both the exterior and interior of buildings. Millworks triple shadow profile, designed to look like finger cladding battens, introduces depth and texture whilst curved or scooped designs add unique appeal and intricacy bringing elevations to life. Cladding orientation is another way to enhance a design. By experimenting with angles, such as diagonal black cladding against grey battens, or shifting between horizontal and vertical cladding on different facades, architects can create a sense of movement and interest. This is a simple yet effective way to give buildings more personality and visual impact.
Bringing colour back into architecture
In a world that often feels chaotic there’s a growing need for buildings that bring brightness and joy into our lives. Vibrancy is making a comeback as architects use colour as a means of expression, helping to create bold spaces that uplift and inspire. A standout example is Devlin Architects’ Eaton Socon Pre-school project where various colours contrast against the black timber cladding, creating a stimulating environment for children and staff. At Millworks our factory coating line is being utilised to create eye-catching colour combinations. From black batten cladding with expressions of red timber, inspired by Falu Red Norwegian staining, to weathered OrganoWood® cladding paired with green steelwork and Cambridge bricks, colour is becoming an integral part of modern architecture.

Specifying locally supplied timber
As part of the ongoing commitment to combat climate change, one of the simplest ways to reduce the carbon footprint of a project is by using your local timber supplier. By specifying local suppliers, architects can minimise transportation emissions and support regional economies. Millworks supports Devlin Architects across the East of England to provide sustainable timber solutions. Whilst operating nationwide, our location provides easy links with East of England, London, South East and South West allowing Millworks to support a wide range of building projects. As supply chains shift, Devlin Architects have been focusing on using alternatives to Siberian Larch, ensuring that projects continue to support ethical practice, reduce environmental impact and maintain high aesthetics. BCLarch®, the latest addition to Millworks’ range, offers a durable and ethically sourced alternative with long-term performance.
Ensuring fire protection
As building regulations continue to evolve, fire protection remains a top priority for architects and builders. Timber cladding remains a complaint choice but requires careful attention to fire safety regulations. Millworks is a trusted partner in providing fire-rated cladding solutions ensuring that projects meet specified requirements and providing peace of mind to homeowners and building occupants. With fire-retardant treatments that still allow for a variety of finishes, architects can create stunning façades while ensuring the highest levels of fire protection.
As we look forward to 2025 and beyond, these architectural trends highlight a growing commitment to creating thoughtful spaces that embrace sustainability, creativity, and responsibly sourced materials.
